Oh this weather is killing me!!! Several days of sunshine then several days of rain then several days of cold then back to several days of sunshine on and on and on..... But I got the raised beds done! Yippee!!!With the ups and downs of the weather over the last two weeks I could only do a little work here and there. So I already explained that I built the beds, started a base layer of old newspaper then some hay. I followed that with several inches of horse manure that I found from a farm advertising on Craig's List. For $10 each I bought a scoop of poop and it took two truck beds full of poop to get a nice thickness in the garden beds. Tracy even pitched in a hand to help unload and spread out the poop. The horse manure should be plenty nutrient rich but for another $5 to Home Depot I purchased a bag of Virago Tomato and Vegetable Plant Food for extra measure. I split the bag of fertilizer between the two beds and finally I topped them with several bags of top soil. Now we just let the beds sit for a few weeks and let Mother Nature do her thing. Hopefully some earthworms will find a new home also.
My other side project of building a cold frame is going okay. I only say okay because me and the circular saw have a difference of opinion as to what a straight line is. I have the old windows, front and back panels are cut and finished, and I have all the other pieces of wood cut. My only problem is the side panels with their really long diagonal angle for the window frame lid. I need some help but thankfully my father-in-law is coming to town soon. We feed him home cooked meals and he helps with projects around the house. It is a win-win for all!
Tracy was given a ziplock bag of peas but they started to sprout on there own and way too early. We decided to go ahead and plant them in some Dixie cups with potting soil and placed them in the kitchen window. That was on this past Saturday. Tracy noticed on Wednesday afternoon that little green shoots have popped up. These peas are growing fast. I tried to tell Tracy that we need to worry when they start saying "Feed me Seymour!" but evidently she has not seen Little Shop of Horrors. I guess I will have to add that one to my Netflix queue.
